At COP29 in Baku, AISESA colleagues actively contributed to advancing Africa's energy and climate agenda through various high-level engagements and side events. Their contributions highlighted the need for context-specific strategies that align with the continent's development goals and the global climate agenda.
AISESA colleagues engaged with senior stakeholders such as the head of the IPCC, Jim Skea, and the UN’s Secretary General, António Guterres.
One notable event was the workshop on facilitating inclusive and just energy transitions, which aimed to produce policy guidelines for including off-grid solutions and community energy in energy transition strategies. This workshop sought to influence discussions at COP29 and convene follow-up discussions at COP30 in Brazil. It focused on integrating technical, social, and political dimensions to find effective solutions for sustainable energy transitions in Africa.
Additionally, AISESA colleagues contributed to sessions that underscored the importance of strengthening African institutions and fostering equitable collaborations. Their involvement aimed to ensure that Africa's unique challenges and opportunities are adequately represented in global climate discussions. AISESA colleagues were involved in the Africa Pavilion, where they engaged in sessions highlighting Africa's renewable energy potential and the need for context-specific solutions. These discussions underscored the importance of strengthening African institutions and fostering equitable collaborations to ensure that Africa's unique challenges and opportunities are adequately represented in global climate discussions.
Another panel engagement considered a session on “Women in Power – A Just Transition in the Global South”. This Blue Zone event focused on integrating gender equality into energy transition strategies. The discussion emphasized the importance of inclusive policies that empower women in the energy sector, particularly in the Global South.
Through these engagements, AISESA reaffirmed its commitment to driving Africa's energy transition by promoting inclusive, sustainable, and locally relevant solutions.
