AISESA exists to strengthen Africa’s capability and agency to shape its energy, climate and development futures. We connect research, policy and practice; support the production and use of actionable evidence; strengthen institutional learning; and cultivate the next generation of African researchers, practitioners and future leaders working across energy, climate and development.
Our values express not only what we seek to achieve, but how we work: how questions are defined, knowledge is produced, whom we produce it with, and what we will and will not do in this pursuit.
We believe that high-quality scientific investigation must be context-specific and practice-oriented. We are committed to scientific excellence grounded in methodological rigour, ethical integrity and diligence. Excellence also requires research to be attentive to context, relevant to the questions being addressed and transparent about its assumptions and limitations. We recognise that scientific research is one important source of knowledge among others, including professional, institutional, practical and community knowledge. We develop high-quality, locally relevant knowledge outputs intended to lead meaningful, recognised impact across Africa's climate-energy-development nexus. We do not plagiarise, manipulate data, fabricate or manipulate evidence, or knowingly rely on unverifiable resources. Nor will we sacrifice the quality and relevance of inquiry to meet predetermined targets or interests that privilege benchmarks over context-sensitive outcomes.
We believe that African societies must exercise meaningful authority over the decisions that shape their energy and development futures. AISESA is therefore African-led and grounded in African contexts, institutions and priorities. We are committed to a bottom-up approach, as we mobilise African capabilities to develop initiatives that are owned, led and driven by Africans to meet community, national and continental needs. We welcome international collaborations and sources of finance where they respect African leadership, contribute fairly and support lasting institutional capability.
We believe that an energy transition and structural transformation in Africa must account for all, and no one should be left behind. We therefore work for inclusion and social justice by encouraging the full participation and representation of diverse groups in energy decision-making — particularly children, women and other groups whose capabilities and priorities have been made marginal over the course of Africa's development history. We incentivise solutions tailored to low-income communities and we do not lend our work to interventions that reinforce historical or emerging inequalities. We work to eliminate discrimination and ensure the impartial sharing of resources.
We believe that leading with transparency and integrity is central to our mission to produce and disseminate knowledge that bridges research, policy and practice. We endeavour to apply these values explicitly in the publication of results, stakeholder consultation notes, and annual reports/audits. We communicate openly about the limitations, uncertainties and methodological choices made by the institute and its members. We will endeavor to produce transparent, verifiable reports, nor exaggerate results to impress stakeholders, secure donor contributions or attract partnerships.
AISESA is a community built through collaboration. Our understanding of solidarity extends across countries, generations, disciplines and professional communities, and also includes international collaborators who share a commitment to more equitable knowledge relationships.
We reject extractive partnerships that remove data and knowledge from their contexts, marginalise local expertise, concentrate recognition elsewhere or leave participating institutions no stronger than before.
